Building Awareness During National Endometriosis Awareness Month

Building Awareness During National Endometriosis Awareness Month

Dr. John J. Rapisarda of Fertility Centers of Illinois

Chicago, IL (PRWEB) March 27, 2012

What is endometriosis?

Endometriosis is a painful, chronic disease that affects at least 6.3 million women in the U.S. and millions across the globe. Approximately 35 to 50 percent of women with infertility also have endometriosis. Building awareness of this disease is critical in aiding effective diagnoses and infertility treatment.

Each month when women menstruate, they shed the endometrial lining found in their uterus. When the endometrial tissue normally found in the uterus grows outside the uterus and in other places of the body, it is known as endometriosis.

Endometrial growths have been found on the ovaries, fallopian tubes, bladder, on the outside of the uterus, lining the pelvic cavity and between the vagina and rectum. While rare, growths have also been found in the arm, thigh and lung. Each month, endometrial tissue continues to break down and shed as it would during a normal menstrual cycle. Without the ability to drain from the body as it would in normal menstruation, inflammation and pain result.

Endometriosis affects fertility, bowel function, gynecological health and most importantly, quality of life. The cause of endometriosis remains unknown, as does a permanent cure. Research continues to focus on establishing the underlying cause, genetic patterns and refined treatment options.

Doctors are now able to alleviate symptoms as well as increase fertility once a diagnosis has been determined.

Common symptoms:

Painful menstruation
Pain during sexual activity
Painful urination or bowel movements during menstruation
Infertility
Fatigue
Gastrointestinal issues such as nausea, constipation and diarrhea
Recurrent yeast infections
Chemical sensitivities
Allergies

Scarring and adhesions from endometriosis can restrict movement of the ovaries, change the position of the fallopian tubes and ovaries as well as block the fallopian tubes. Endometriosis can also increase production of prostaglandins, hormones that affect fertility.

To improve fertility, doctors can surgically remove adhesions and scar tissue in the female reproductive system. Surgical options are not always necessary to achieve pregnancy, however. Stimulation of the ovaries with fertility medications and in vitro fertilization will often overcome the impact of endometriosis on fertility. IVF allows doctors to bypass any damaged tissue due to endometriosis.

Approximately 60 to 70 percent of women with endometriosis conceive and not all individuals with endometriosis are infertile. I have treated hundreds of patients who have overcome infertility due to endometriosis and have had happy, healthy children. Rest assured, many of us in the field of reproductive medicine are working tirelessly to increase success rates through scientific study and further advancement in technique.

Personal Development and Fitness Expert John Spencer Ellis Warns About “Sociopathic Gurus”

Personal Development and Fitness Expert John Spencer Ellis Warns About “Sociopathic Gurus”

Fitness, Nutrition & Coaching Expert John Spencer Ellis

Rancho Santa Margarita, CA (PRWEB) March 22, 2012

If 1 in every 25 people are sociopaths, according to Dr. Martha Stout, a clinical psychologist at Harvard Medical School who wrote “The Sociopath Next Door,” then chances are, you’ve encountered a few in your life. From reality TV to bad dates to unethical salespeople, sociopaths do live next door or down the block or around the corner, so it’s important to understand what makes a sociopath and how to handle them. Personal development and fitness expert John Spencer Ellis offers some illuminating warnings and recommendations on his blog at http://johnspencerellis.com/is-your-guru-or-anyone-in-your-inner-circle-a-sociopath/.

“While this topic is a little different than the more positive aspects of health, fitness, wellness and personal development I typically blog about, I think it’s a really important one. Sociopathic people can be manipulative and dangerous, so you need to learn how to identify them and how to handle them,” said Ellis, founder of John Spencer Ellis Enterprises, a fitness and personal development solutions company. “The crazy thing about sociopathic people is that they will have you believing that you are the crazy one, so you really have to learn to pay attention and listen to your gut.”

If someone exhibits three or more of the following characteristics, they might be a sociopath: antagonistic, callous, impulsive, pathological liar, lack of or shallow emotions, exaggerated sexuality, excessive boasting, glib, manipulative, secretive and paranoid.

Ellis recommends the following steps for dealing with a sociopath in your inner circle:

Listen to your gut. If it’s telling you to stay away from someone, pay attention.

Do your own research. If a coach, mentor or guru comes across a manipulative or slimy, stay away. Don’t just listen to their boasting or testimonials.

If someone seems to have befriended you for their benefit only, take a closer look at the relationship.

If everyone else in your organization strongly dislikes one person, you should probably get rid of them.

Do not try to help or fix them.

The blog offer more example of well-known sociopaths and advice for staying clear of manipulative people. In addition, Ellis’ blog regularly offers personal development, fitness and wellness advice.

Northstar Publishing Launches New Websites

Northstar Publishing Launches New Websites

Danville, VT (PRWEB) March 21, 2012

In January, Northstar Publishing, of Danville Vt., debuted new Web sites for the North Star Monthly, The Kingdom Guide and Living Healthy.

Since the company’s last Web site upgrade three years ago, visitor numbers per month have increased at a significant rate. In an effort to improve the digital footprint of Northstar Publishing, the company worked with Notchnet, Inc. to find a way to offer all publications digitally, in their entirety, while maintaining the current print subscription and newsstand model.

This was relatively straightforward for the Kingdom Guide and Living Healthy, both free publications. However, it became clear that the North Star would require a lot of careful consideration since its readership is primarily by subscription. Since the complete “package” of the North Star is important, breaking it up into articles scattered across cyberspace would be detrimental.

Instead of an online “subscription” system, the new site offers an online “newsstand.” In this system, a visitor to the Web site can pay $ 1.75, the current newsstand price, and view a complete copy of the current issue as a downloadable file. The reader then has access to that file online until the next issue is published, or it can be saved to their computer.

The benefits of this system are the ability to view the North Star in its original and intended state. Also, it allows readers to download not only to their computers, but also to mobile devices and tablets. The system seems to work exceptionally well with iPhones and iPads. In fact, these devices still allow the reader to digitally flip pages one by one, just like they were reading the print copy.

The Kingdom Guide and Living Healthy publications will also be downloadable in their original format.

Some of the functionality from the old sites will be carried over, such as the ability to subscribe to the print edition, pay advertising invoices, and browse archives.

Over the past year, the Northstar Monthly subscriber list has grown by 8 percent and Northstar Publishing hopes this change will give tech-saavy readers a convenient delivery method for reading Northstar publications, and at the same time, provide a new benefit to advertisers through free online advertising and click-able links.

For our many readers who still prefer to hold a printed copy in their hands, they can still expect to find Northstar Publishing magazines in your mailboxes and local stores.

New Circuit Board from Tekscan Makes Force Sensor Integration Easier for OEMs

New Circuit Board from Tekscan Makes Force Sensor Integration Easier for OEMs

QuickStart Board Makes Sensor Integration Easier

Boston, MA (PRWEB) March 19, 2012

Tekscan Inc.’s FlexiForce® division announces the release of the FlexiForce QuickStart Board. The QuickStart Board is a finished single voltage source circuit designed for OEMs to quickly drop into a prototype or even easily design into a product to obtain force measurements.

A recent sensor survey conducted by UBM Canon among design engineers showed that a top challenge they face in sourcing components, like force sensors, is ease of integration. The QuickStart Board is designed to ease that burden by making force sensor integration quicker and easier.

Previously, OEMs adopting this thin and flexible sensor technology were tasked with building their own circuit for integration into their OEM device. Now, engineers can simply drop the QuickStart Board into their devices or prototypes, allowing them to focus time and resources elsewhere.

Ideal for OEM product design, this product is also helpful for engineers seeking a quick, easy way to acquire force measurements in initial tests and to validate the performance of FlexiForce sensors in their applications. Specifically, FlexiForce sensors combined with the QuickStart Board can:

Detect and measure a relative change in force or applied load
Detect and measure the rate of change in force
Identify force thresholds and trigger appropriate action
Detect contact and/or touch

Starting at $ 150, the FlexiForce QuickStart Board is available initially with two free sample FlexiForce sensors. Volume pricing for the QuickStart Board and force sensor pricing is available upon request.

The QuickStart Board is compatible with all of Tekscan’s off-the-shelf pinned FlexiForce sensor models (sold separately). Tekscan can also customize a force sensor in a unique form factor to suit your specific requirements.

Purchase a FlexiForce QuickStart Boar d today and see how easy it is to integrate FlexiForce sensors into your application.

About Tekscan

Founded in 1987, Tekscan manufactures thin, flexible, tactile pressure and force sensors and measurement systems. Tekscan’s patented FlexiForce sensor technology has been incorporated into many successful OEM products, including athletic devices to monitor grip measurement, medical devices to monitor the effectiveness of drug delivery, and in robots to monitor balance and lend a more lifelike gait. Tekscan is widely recognized among industry experts as the premier thin, flexible, accurate force sensing technology.

American Association of Poison Control Centers Celebrates 50th Annual Poison Prevention Week

American Association of Poison Control Centers Celebrates 50th Annual Poison Prevention Week

Alexandria, VA (PRWEB) March 14, 2012

The American Association of Poison Control Centers (AAPCC) will join local poison centers and poison prevention partners across the country in celebrating the 50th anniversary of National Poison Prevention Week March 18 through 24, 2012, according to Dr. Rick Dart, AAPCC president.

Since 1962, the President of the United States has proclaimed the third week of March as National Poison Prevention Week to raise awareness about the dangers of poisoning.

“Much progress has been made in poisoning prevention in the 50 years since National Poison Prevention Week was first observed,” Dart said. “However, there is still much work to be done; poisoning is now the leading cause of death from unintentional injuries in the U.S. – ahead of motor vehicle crashes and guns.”

Fifty years ago, 3-year-old Philip was rushed to the nearest hospital 30 minutes away. Tragically, he had found and drunk a bottle of rat poison. Although every attempt was made to save his life, he lived only a few more hours. Fifty years later, his sister Cathy Seifried of Texas is still grieving. According to Seifried, her brother’s death had long-lasting effects on her entire family. “I had good parents,” Seifried said. “They managed to function and go through the daily motions, but as a family, we were broken.”

Today, Seifried focuses on supporting poison control centers. “If our family would’ve had access to the education, outreach and treatment services that today’s poison centers offer, we may have avoided the heartbreak and devastation caused by my brother’s death,” Seifried said.

“Cathy’s story illustrates the importance of the treatment services provided by America’s 57 poison centers,” said Debbie Carr, AAPCC executive director. “Unfortunately, federal budget cuts in 2011 reduced funding for poison centers by 36 percent; further cuts will make it difficult for poison centers to continue providing those essential, life-saving services.”

According to Carr, America’s 57 poison centers are committed to safeguarding the health and well-being of every American through poison prevention and free, confidential, expert medical services. Poison centers respond to calls 24 hours a day, seven days a week in order to help those who have been exposed to toxic substances. They also are committed to providing information about how poisonings occur and ways to prevent them.

In 2010, U.S. poison centers answered more than 3.9 million calls, including nearly 2.4 million calls about human exposures to poisons. About 75 percent of all calls to poison centers originated in people’s homes, and about 71 percent of the people who called with poison emergencies were treated at home following the advice of poison center experts, saving millions of dollars in medical expenses.

Since 1962, the third week of March has been designated National Poison Prevention Week and has focused national attention on the dangers of poisonings and how to prevent them. Every day of this year’s 50th anniversary will focus on a poison-prevention-related theme:

Sunday, March 18 – Poisonings Span a Lifetime
Monday, March 19 – Children Act Fast … So Do Poisons
Tuesday, March 20 – Poison Centers: Saving Lives 24/7
Wednesday, March 21 – Take Your Medicines Safely
Thursday, March 22 – Home Safe Home
Friday, March 23 – Poison Prevention Superheroes: Share Your Stories
Saturday, March 24 – 50 Ways To Prevent Poisonings

“Philip has been gone for 50 years,” Seifried said. “I know there are many other stories just like his. For their sakes, please get involved with your local poison center in promoting poisoning prevention and the Poison Help number. You can make a difference.”

“If the unthinkable happens, it’s good to know help is just a phone call away,” Dart said. “Program your cell phone with the Poison Help number and post it near your home phone. 1-800-222-1222.”

For more information, the media may contact Loreeta Canton, AAPCC communications manager, at 703.894.1863 or canton(at)aapcc(dot)org or Brett Schuster, communications assistant, at 703.894.1859 or schuster(at)aapcc(dot)org.

The AAPCC supports the nation’s 57 poison centers in their efforts to treat and prevent drug, consumer product, animal, environmental and food poisoning. Members staff the Poison Help hotline at 1-800-222-1222 that provides free, confidential, expert medical advice 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year from toxicology specialists, including nurses, pharmacists, physicians and poison information providers. In addition, the AAPCC maintains the only poison information and surveillance database in the United States, providing real-time monitoring of unusual poisoning patterns, chemical exposures and other emerging public health hazards. The AAPCC partners with federal agencies such as EPA, HRSA and the CDC, as well as private industry.

Researchers Call For Ban On Metal-On-Metal THR

Researchers Call For Ban On Metal-On-Metal THR

New York, New York (PRWEB) March 14, 2012

Bernstein Liebhard LLP reports on a new study published on March 13, 2012 in The Lancet, a British medical journal, concluding that metal-on-metal total hip replacements (“THR”) are more likely to fail than other hip devices, and should therefore be banned*. Researchers analyzed data from the National Joint Registry of England and Wales, the world’s largest database on hip replacements, which included more than 400,000 patients who received a hip replacement between 2003 and 2011. Of the 31,171 individuals who received metal-on-metal THR during that time, 6.2 percent required revision surgery within five years – about a third higher than patients with ceramic or plastic implants. Researchers also concluded that total hip replacement complications were more common in patients who received larger-head implants; women are also more likely to experience total hip replacement complications than men. Lead researcher Ashely Blom, from the University of Bristol, concluded “Metal-on-metal stemmed articulations give poor implant survival compared with other options and should not be implanted.”**

Recommendation To Ban Metal-On-Metal THR Issued On Heels Of Health Alert

The release of these latest findings comes on the heels of a British health directive, advising patients to undergo annual testing for as long as they have a metal-on-metal device to ensure that they are not suffering from tissue damage or other complications.*** Specifically, the Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency (“MHRA”) recommended that metal-on-metal hip recipients should have yearly blood tests to check for metal ion levels. If heightened metal levels are detected, patients should have a magnetic resonance imaging scan (“MRI”) in order to detect possible damage caused by metallic debris.

Safety Concerns Over Metal-on-Metal Total Hip Replacement Complications Continue To Mount

In August 2010, DePuy Orthopaedics, a subsidiary of Johnson & Johnson, issued a voluntary worldwide recall of its ASR hip implant systems, after receiving data from the National Joint Registry of England and Wales that 1 out of every 8 patients (12%-13%) who received the ASR hip implants had to undergo revision surgery within five years of implant.**** In the wake of the DePuy ASR hip recall, metal-on-metal hips have been widely-criticized. Ironically, the impetus for the 2010 recall was based on data from the same registry, which was used by the study’s researchers who are now calling for a ban on all metal-on-metal THR.

The DePuy hip replacement lawyers at Bernstein Liebhard LLP have been involved in lawsuits concerning metal-on-metal THR since the ASR recall in August 2010. The firm is actively filing cases on behalf of individuals who have been implanted with either or both types of artificial metal-on-metal hip implants manufactured by DePuy. The lawsuits allege that the ASR hip replacement and the metal-on-metal Pinnacle hip replacement systems were defectively designed. Bernstein Liebhard LLP is filing cases in the following actions: In re: DePuy Orthopaedics, Inc. ASR Hip Implant Products Liability Litigation (“MDL No. 2197”), which is currently underway in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Ohio and In re: DePuy Orthopaedics, Inc. Pinnacle Hip Implant Products Liability Litigation (“MDL No. 2244”), which is currently underway in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Texas.

Columbia Bank Foundation Awarded Grant in Support of Kitchen Expansion

Columbia Bank Foundation Awarded Grant in Support of Kitchen Expansion

Marie Reger, Executive Director at Eva’s Village and Thomas J. Kemly, President and CEO of Columbia Bank in the expanded kitchen.

Paterson, NJ (PRWEB) March 12, 2012

The soup kitchen program at Eva’s Village, New Jersey’s most comprehensive anti-poverty organization, continues to experience an increase in the number of hungry and homeless coming for a hot mid-day meal. One of the most visible consequences of the national economic downturn is the increased demand for basic social services. Eva’s Village realized the need to increase the capacity of its kitchen program, from 240 seats to 400. This expansion has taken time to complete and could not have been accomplished without the support of dedicated donors like the Columbia Bank Foundation.

The mission of the Columbia Bank Foundation is to make a “measureable difference in people’s lives!” They achieve this goal by providing community grants to local charitable and community organizations. “With the expansion of their Kitchen Program, Eva’s Village realized that they would need to acquire additional tables and chairs,” noted Thomas J. Kemly, President and CEO of Columbia Bank. “Our community grant funded their purchase and made their expansion dream a reality. As a true community bank, we believe in giving something back to the communities we proudly serve.”

The number of homeless and working poor that come to Eva’s Kitchen for the noon meal has increased considerably over the past four years (23%) due to the economic downturn. Yet as the economic crises continues, Marie Reger, Executive Director, sees hope in the continued support from the local business community. “We are thankful for the support of Columbia Bank in helping us with our kitchen expansion,” states Marie Reger. “As it has been said, “It Takes a Village” and this is true when helping the poor, not only for childrearing.”

Eva’s Village started as a simple soup kitchen feeding 30 when it opened in 1982. It now feeds lunch to over 350 men and women each day and includes thirteen other integrated programs housed in numerous buildings spanning several city blocks in downtown Paterson. Founded by Msgr. Vincent E. Puma as a response to the poor and homeless, Eva’s Village (http://www.evasvillage.org) is a non-profit comprehensive social service organization with a mission to feed the hungry, shelter the homeless, treat the addicted and provide medical and dental care to the poor with respect for the human dignity of each individual. Through almost three decades of service, Eva’s Village has established a commendable record in facing community challenges and changing the lives of the hungry, homeless and addicted.

Donna Marie Fico, Director of Marketing & Education at Eva’s Village, notes that while Eva’s Village draws on many sources of funding, grants from larger corporations have suffered in the current economic crisis. Ms. Fico points out that successful local business donors, like Columbia Bank, are very astute in their giving, saying, “Local donors want to know their support is used wisely, and we work very hard to meet their expectations.” Ms. Fico reports that as one of the most comprehensive and effective anti-poverty organizations in the state of New Jersey, Eva’s Village receives high marks for efficiency, including a fifth consecutive Four-Star rating by Charity Navigator, indicating that Eva’s Village “Exceeds industry standards and outperforms most charities in America” (Charity Navigator).
