All proceeds raised at the event will benefit WFWI, whose year long curriculum of programs provides participants with direct aid, rights awareness and leadership education, as well as business and vocational skills training that lead to sustainable income generation.

Hall County, Ga., key-handing ceremony for 20 school buses fueled by propane autogas

This morning state legislators and dignitaries, including Governor Nathan Deal and Lieutenant Governor Casey Cagle, recognized Hall County School System as Georgia’s first school district to fuel their fleet with clean-burning propane autogas. The school district purchased 20Blue Bird Propane-Powered Vision school buses fueled by domestically produced propane autogas to reduce the community’s carbon footprint and lower the county’s costs for school bus fuel and maintenance.

The theme of the event, “Georgians supporting Georgians for a greener community,” emphasized the need to produce and use products that support a clean and healthy environment, by and for the state of Georgia. Manufactured in Georgia, the72-passenger Blue Bird Propane-Powered Visions, each featuring a ROUSH CleanTech liquid propane autogas fuel system, reduce nitrogen oxide, carbon monoxide and total hydrocarbons emissions, and virtually eliminate particulate matter, when compared to school buses powered by conventional fuels.

According to the Natural Resources Defense Council, children are among those most susceptible to the health effects of exhaust exposure as a result of the child’s developing body and lungs, narrower airways, faster metabolism, and faster breathing rates than adults.

The school district expects to save $ 36,000 in fuel costs for their 20 new propane buses in 2012 alone. Transvaginal Mesh serious complications

According to court documents, on April 3rd, 2012, a Minnesota woman, Stacey Pangborn, filed a lawsuit in the U.S. District Court for the District of Maryland (case no. 1:2012cv01018) alleging that she suffered serious complications as a result of her use of a Transvaginal Mesh device. Transvaginal surgical mesh is used to treat pelvic organ prolapse (POP) and Stress Urinary Incontinence (SUI). In the lawsuit, Pangborn claims that she was implanted with the Gynemesh transvaginal mesh device to treat her pelvic organ prolapse and/or stress urinary incontinence. Her vaginal mesh failed and she experienced side effects including recurring incontinence and prolapse, severe pain in her abdomen, pelvis, and vagina, mental and physical pain and suffering, and financial loss. She is suing device manufacturer Ethicon and its parent company, Johnson & Johnson for more than $ 75,000.

Approximately 150 transvaginal mesh lawsuits filed nationwide in three multidistrict litigation cases are consolidated in a fourth. Defendants are the manufacturers American Medical Systems (MDL No. 2325), Boston Scientific Corp. (MDL No. 2326) and Johnson & Johnson’s Ethicon (MDL No. 2327).

This two-day advanced physical therapy and occupational therapy continuing education seminar is designed to expand and advance current clinical knowledge by providing more in depth clinical information needed to problem solve through a complex variety of breast cancer diagnoses. Complex diagnoses include patients with aggressive forms of breast cancer; patients with metastatic breast cancer such as bone and lung metastases; patients with associated co-morbidities such as auto-immune diseases, diabetes, CHF; patients with differential diagnoses such as superior vena cava syndrome, sarcomas, etc.; and patients with treatment complications such as seromas, hematomas, infections, open wounds, axillary web syndrome, and mondors syndrome. Centered on systems management, a series of advanced, synchronized manual therapy treatment techniques are taught in the lab sessions. These advanced clinical treatment techniques will allow experienced therapists to build on their current expertise by being inclusive of all the major systems involved in the medical treatment of breast cancer patients, namely the musculo-skeletal system, the nervous system, the vascular system, the lymphatic system, and the endocrine system. Careful study of how each of these systems are affected in the breast cancer population will enable clinicians to apply advanced treatment concepts and integrative skills to effectively and successfully treat a multitude of complex patient scenarios that go beyond the routine post surgery and post radiation management of this population. Additionally, the integrated skills taught in the seminar will add leverage to current treatment protocols, optimize the functioning of patients, and bring about improved sustainable results. Upon completion of the continuing education course on breast cancer, clinicians will be able to design specific exercise protocols and use integrated systems management techniques in the advanced treatment of breast cancer patients with surgical complications, severe side effects of radiation, side effects of chemotherapy, and side effects of targeted hormone therapies. The information presented in the course will enhance therapists ability to develop a continuum of care, lead a multi-disciplined approach, and effectively market new concepts in the management of patients with breast cancer to the medical community. The course presents evidence-based material both in the medical management of patients with breast cancer and in the rehabilitative therapy management of patients with breast cancer. Julia Osborne, PT, CLT-LANA, graduated with a BSc. (Honors) in Physiotherapy from the University of Cape Town, South Africa. The Lakes at Pointe West, a Vero Beach, Fla.-based retirement community, announced today that the community’s wellness program has won the Assisted Living Federation of America’s (ALFA) 2012 ‘Best of the Best’ Award in the category of Clinical Wellness.

The company’s “purpose-based wellness programming” took home top honors in one of the most competitive categories, Clinical Wellness. Purpose-based wellness programming is a collection of wellness programs developed specifically to counter the effects of chronic diseases or afflictions common among older adults.

The impetus for developing the wellness initiative was recent data which showed that a majority of Medicare, Medicaid and personal health care expenditures for adults 65 and older fall into two categories: the long-term management of chronic diseases and the immediate care required following a major health event such as a fall or stroke.

Executive Director Karen McHenry says the community’s purpose-based wellness programming addresses these needs by offering members alternative solutions to managing certain chronic diseases and by seeking to prevent avoidable health events such as falls. If a negative health event is considered unavoidable, she says the programming seeks to reduce a member’s length-of-stay in a long-term care setting.

One of the programs, called ‘Healthy Back and Balance,’ was designed to improve balance and strength while reducing lower-back pain with timed strength and cardio exercises. Following the class, 16 participants reported a 6.7% increase in balance and a 7.1% increase in strength.

“For years now, we have made it our goal to lead the industry in developing wellness programs which can improve and extend the lives of older adults,” said McHenry. “This recognition is humbling – we think there’s a better way to approach long-term care and we are excited about the opportunity to share our findings with other providers.”

Rick Grimes, president and CEO of ALFA, says the competition is designed to encourage the sharing of best practices.
